"C’mon, Ken! Let me fire the Bird Missile!"

"No, Joe! Dr. Nambu said we can only use the Bird Missile when it’s crucial to the plot of the episode! We don’t have enough of an animation budget to feature you maniacally pressing the red button over and over again!"

No? Well, how about this?

"My name is Joe Asakura Inigo de Montoya. Galactor, you killed my parents, prepared to die!"

Hmmm… I like it, in any case.

Question by elijah: Why won’t my Linksys wireless router connect me to the internet?
I have a Linksys WRT54G2 V1 router connected to a Motorola Surfboard modem. We have 2 Laptops. Both will connect wired directly to the modem but not wireless from the router. Both computers connect to the router but only with local access.

Answer by Adrian
When switching between PC and router, you have to reset the modem so it sees the “new” device (PC or router). Otherwise, it sits there waiting for the previous device to come back online and not assign an IP to the new device….

Purchased this to replace a Motorola SB6120 that was giving me trouble. Was getting 15Mb download and .3Mb upload speeds with the Motorola. After installing the Arris I am now getting 25Mb download and 4Mb upload speeds using Comcast.

I’m a recent Comcast customer who started out with a Comcast modem rental. Not wanting to pay the $7 per month plus tax, I bought this one, which is exactly the same make and model as the rental. It has performed seamlessly after the call to activate it. I highly recommend this modem for this purpose!

Problems at first, Quickly solved, June 14, 2012

So I need to say first off I bought this Modem for my new comcast service installation. Before I had used the rental modems at several other places but noted that my best internet speed was always with the Aris modem I had rented from comcast originally. I did the math and determined that in the long run buying my own modem was cheaper than a rental, plus I could take it with me when I moved. (College student) so I had used speedtest to see that although I was paying for a 25mb/s connection I was getting nowhere near that speed with the previous qwest and comcast modems. I was not happy at all. Immediatley upon installation I ran a speedtest and found that with my 25mb/s connection I was getting 40mb/s download and 25mb/s upload. This is AMAZING compared to the 12mb/s download and 6mb/s upload I was getting with my previous modems..

Now the bad, This guy was a pain to install. I do network management and computer repair and have installed dozens of modems/router setups. this guy just did not want to connect to comcast. I had initially had it installed next to my TV then within a few hours wanted it directly hooked to my router and desktop in the next room over. upon unplugging it and running a line over to the next room I had hours worth of trying everything from resetting all of these devices and troubleshooting.

I eventually just left it unplugged for an hour or so as I was about to return the item as I feared it was defective. Upon my return I replugged the entire setup into my network and it immediately connected to comcast as It should. I can’t say this is optimum for any piece of hardware but I am happy with my new device and internet speed. I can stream Movies and the such while playing Counterstrike with no drop in bandwidth OR lag.

  4. When you connect using the wire you are using the TCP/IP setup that is configured for the network card. It is correctly getting autoconfig ( an acceptable IP address, mask, router, and DNS) from the linksys… so we know the linksys is set up right.

When you make a wireless connection you are using the TCP/IP setup that is configured for the wireless card. It must be different. Either it is not set up to accept autoconfig or you are on Vista and the network has been restricted to local. Compare the settings to the network card and match them.

  5. Switch off the Router and on both your laptops do this
Right click the wireless icon (bottom right of screen)
choose Right click your wireless network icon(bottom right of screen Choose (network and sharing centre ) then choose(manage wireless networks) highlight your network if it is there and Choose remove exit this back to desktop

Reboot your laptops now left click your wireless icon and this time choose connect when YOUR network name appears connect add your password save the settings and thats you hopefully this will fix your problem

  6. A definite answer is hard to give. From my experience the symptom which you are describing point to a wireless interference problem.

The problem has nothing to do with the wireless access point connecting to the Motorola modem. This is evident because if you connect the laptops with a ethernet cable everything works.

The problem (most likely) isn’t with the laptops because it is effecting two devices.

So this brings us to interference. Wireless networking is highly effected by interference. The frequency that WiFi operates on is the same frequencies that some cordless phones, microwaves, blue tooth and other devices use. This makes interference the number one problem with wireless.

    Things to check:
    1. Check the cordless phones in your house. If they say 2.4Ghz on them they can be a problem.
    2. If you are in a highly populated area with lots of wireless access points, interference is a problem.
    3. Microwaves: If the connection drops when you are popping pop corn, interference is a problem.

    The Fix:
A wireless access point has 11 channels in the 2.4Ghz range that it uses. The problem is these channels overlap. They overlap so much that it only leaves us with 3 channels that do not interfere with each other.

We need to determine the IP address of your router, access the config. screens and change the wireless channels and see if the problem improves.

    Determine the IP address:
    Click Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt
    At the Prompt type: ipconfig
You will see a line that says “Gateway Address ……”

The Gateway Address is the ip address of your router.

    Access the config screens:
Type the gateway address in a browser (IE, Firefox, Safari) press ENTER
You should be prompted with a username and password. The defaults are admin/admin.

    To change the wireless channels:
Click on the “Wireless” tab at the top.
Where it says “Wireless Channel” is where we need to make the changes.
The three wireless channels that do not interfere with each other are 1,6 and 11. Change the setting to 1. Test it… if no good change it to 6… if no good change it to 11.. is still no good keep trying with the other channels. You do NOT what to keep the channel setting on auto.

    Good Luck,

    –Rick
