This card is sitting on the desk in my hotel room – the Hilton Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego. Taken with cameraphone.

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering: I checked, and there is no actual wireless network available in the room.

Question by Josh Y: How to connect to the internet using a wireless card in a desktop??
I know it’s easy to connect using a laptop, just pick a connection.
I am using a desktop over at my Grandpa’s house and I am trying to connect to the Internet, how do I set it up without calling the cable company?? I guess I am just trying to connect to someones internet without paying for it. This will only be for a week, while I move into a house.
All I have is my wireless card.
Hope I explain this well.
Thanks for the help
I cannot view any open connections.

Just like your laptop, if you can see an open advertised connection, and select connect.

Get the latest drivers for a stable and fast connection!, December 11, 2013
    By

This review is from: ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-AC1900 PCI-E Adapter (PCE-AC68) (Personal Computers)

Download and install the latest Asus driver released 12/10/13.. http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/PCE-AC68/UT_PCE_AC68_2071.zip

It will fix most problems… just sad that it took Asus so long to release a stable driver when Broadcom had a driver available for a couple of months. The connection will now be a stable 1300Mbps if used with a supported router.

Upgrade from AE1000 USB adapter, September 20, 2013
    By

This review is from: ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-AC1900 PCI-E Adapter (PCE-AC68) (Personal Computers)

I have waited for the Haswell compatible version of the PCE-AC66 (now called the pce-ac68) for a long time now. I have been using a Lynksis AE1000. The AE1000 was very unstable and couldn’t connect half the time. Basically it had gotten out dated. So I saw this product was released a short while ago and bought it.

Onto the packaging. It was shipped in very protective bubble wrap. The product itself was packed very neatly as usual for ASUS products. Came with everything I needed (The CD, antennae, magnetic base, and if I needed one a small form factor PCI plate). Instructions were simple; install, connect, mount base. Build quality is phenomenal, no weakness or shortcomings that I felt in anything.

Once installed and the software was installed on the PC it connected immediately, no problems. The Lynksis AE1000 USB adapter had a 2 bar signal strength, while the PCE-AC68 had full 5 bars of signal strength. Great improvement over the AE1000, especially in stability. I restarted to see if I could connect on restart immediately and it passed where the AE1000 failed.

Speed tests show slightly lower latency, no a huge improvement in latency since it is still WiFi. I use Wireless N still until I pick up a new router, now that I know this product is great I might buy the AC66 router. Now I am getting consistent speeds my ISP provides me.

I would highly recommend this to anyone upgrading to wireless AC because it is very fast especially with the triple antenna design, and the build quality and wireless stability is perfect.

Great upgrade over older MoCA network., September 25, 2013

    Pros:
Speed, range. Internal card, one less thing hanging off HTPC (vs. USB adapter dongle). Has the magnetic base extension you can attach the antennas to if necessary. Supposed to fix the AC66’s incompatibility w/ Z87 boards.

    Cons:
    None yet.

Felt 802.11 ac was ready to try so I upgraded my HTPC’s MoCA 10/100 network (Actiontecs) which had been working fine for three years. Paired this NIC w/ the Netgear 6300 ac router. I do incremental backups of a 1TB dataset nightly; the MoCA connection typically topped out near 88Mb/s getting close to the limit of the 10/100 interface. When I connected up this NIC to the new 5Ghz ac network the network properties in Win8 x64 Pro said it was connecting at 750Mb/s which is tremendous for my house/ceiling/walls setup. Transfer speeds for my dataset are now in the 45MB/s range or 375Mb/s… so roughly four times the MoCA speed. Very, very, cool. Playing multiple live or recorded HD streams from Windows Media Center (usually about 12-15Mb/s streams) no hiccups at all. No issues w/ Netflix streaming either. WAN downloads don’t come anywhere near saturating as I just have Comcast’s 20Mb/s down and 10Mb/s up. Retiring my old MoCA network for this ac and not looking back, highly recommended.

  4. Assuming the card is already installed….

    1) Is your wireless network connection enabled? How to check…

    Either
    1) Start -> Right-click My Network Places -> Properties
    2) Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections

Make sure the wireless connection is enabled. If it has a red X through it, right-click and choose Enable.

    2) Once you make sure it is enabled, right click on the wireless connection and click View Available Wireless Networks.

If there are any wireless networks within range, they will show up. If none show up, then there aren’t any within range of your wireless card.

  5. Someone who lives close to grandpa’s house needs a router, so you can get a connection.
