    A beast of a machine, September 28, 2012

I have had this for one week and I absolutely love it. For starters, my HP 3330 mfp multi-function machine died after nearly 10 years of use. You would think that I would naturally go and get another one from HP, right? Wrong. HP was once the king of the printer manufacturers and Brother was an afterthought. Times have changed and Brother, in my opinion, has created some compelling multifunction entries that people should look into.

At this juncture, this is what I like:

    –Speed, 42 ppm
–quality of print that is adjustable for draft copies
    –high capacity paper reservoir
–ability to print off my Android device wirelessly, although I would not use this for presentation output
–print directly from a USB drive
    –crisp color scans
–separate shut off switch to save energy (my old HP didn’t have this).

I paid up to get this machine for my home office because I needed the machine to be a workhorse at certain times, although not all the time. I just couldn’t trust a $250 HP offering to get it done for me.

My only complaint would be for Brother to invest in some installation and startup videos for my specific machine — that would be awesome.

    Pretty Good Copier/Scanner/Printer/Fax, April 8, 2013

At our small office we got rid of our big copier/scanner/printer/fax in favor of something small that wasn’t in the price range of an automobile, like our previous copier, which we wore out after about 6 years. The idea was that there wouldn’t be a contract and if it broke we’d just replace it. The things we needed were: access control, scanning to email, an auto sheet feeder, printing, and faxing. This machine does all those things. You can manage everything through its web interface, which is nice.

    Things I like:
    1. It starts printing as it is scanning the pages and it prints pretty fast.
    2. Web setup interface.
    3. Sheet feeder (but it’s loud)
    4. It uses cheap toner that many other brother printers use (which helps keep the cost down)
    5. Color scanning (although it’s just a black and white laser, which is what we wanted though)
    6. Single pass duplex scanning

Things I don’t like (but at this point, since the price is so cheap compared to a copier with service contract, they still don’t outweigh the money we are saving):
    1. In order to have it print a report on a successful fax you must turn on reports for successful scans to email and that makes no sense to me so I have to turn it off since we scan a lot and don’t want to waste a bunch of paper. The setting for this is in the fax section which makes it weird when you start getting reports when you scan because you cannot find a scan report setting to shut off and the scan report looks just like a fax confirmation report.
    2. If you wanted to scan ten separate 5-page documents to a single email address you have to reselect scan to email, address book, and then select your email address every time, over and over again (I’m used to be able to do a bunch of jobs before it reverts back to the home screen).
    3. The highest “scan to email” pdf resolution is only 300dpi (if you pick color it gives you options of 100, 200, 300, 600)
    4. When you put paper in the auto sheet feeder a message shows up on the screen (“ADF Ready”) telling you it is ready but it stays on the screen for a few seconds, holding up the machine, making you wait to do anything. I’ve found that if I am scanning I wait to put the paper in the feeder until I’m selecting the email address in the address book and then it doesn’t show “ADF Ready” and therefore doesn’t hold me up. There’s nothing you can do if you are copying except wait for the message to go away so you can proceed.
    5. It doesn’t multi-task very well. For example, if someone was printing to it, you can’t be faxing or scanning on it until it finishes the print job. It does multi-task in that it can be scanning your multi-page document and already making copies of it while finishing the scan.
    6. Only letter and legal paper size.
    7. If you run out of letter paper and have legal in the other tray it doesn’t give you an error telling you the paper is out, it prints your letter sized print job on legal paper–not cool, get out the scissors.

    Really tall, December 23, 2012

I purchased this as a backup for my large machine at the office. The pluses are that it has a full sized glass, so legal sized documents can lay flat and be scanned. It runs smoothly and mostly quietly. It is a full function machine which would serve any office or home well.

The only drawback is that it is really tall. If you put it on a standard height counter, your shorter employees will need a stepping stool to operate the machine.
