    Best printer I’ve had so far, September 21, 2013

    We use our printers for casual printing like printing a form here and there, some work for the kids for school and some photos for our own home use so I’m definitely not looking for any professional grade photo printers or high volume printers. I do need a scanner though, I typically scan important receipts and keep them “in the cloud” so I have them handy if and when I need them. This comes very handy.

    This is the first time I buy a Brother product. I’ve read good reviews of their products so decided to give it a chance. I got this printer at a local store for a lot less then the list price – something like 40% off that price in fact. So far looks like this paid off, setup was super easy (wireless network)and I was able to get going right away. I’ve tried to scan some documents and we’ve already printed and copied some documents too, and I’m very happy with the results. The 2-side printing worked fine and looks like it will save us a lot of paper – good for us and for the environment too!

    The printer is very compact, and also very quiet compared to others I’ve owned.
    The only down side I found so far is that the paper tray holds a relatively small number of sheets. It’s not like I print a lot, but I don’t like to have to load paper that often. I guess that’s the trade off for having a compact printer.

    Ink cost is supposed to be pretty much in line with other similar printers, but I will only be able to tell over time. So far I haven’t change any cartridges but it’s a well known fact that the real cost over time is ink, not the printer itself. I haven’t seen a printer yet that is really impressive in ink costs. All my friends, regardless of what brand or model they have, always complain that ink is expensive…

    The LCD screen is nice. It’s a little small but big enough to conveniently operate the printer. A little larger screen would be even nicer. I personally don’t really think an LCD screen is a must on a printer. It wasn’t a major factor for me.
    I also don’t use any printing directly from my camera (which is available on this printer) or from an SD card etc. Maybe that’s why I don’t need an LCD screen. I prefer to do all the prep on my PC and send to the printer.

    There’s a mobile app that allows you to print from almost any mobile device, Android, IOS and Kindle Fire are supported. I’ve tried it and setup is super easy. However the android version had some glitches… for example, it displayed some documents for printing but then when i actually sent them to printing it gave all kinds of weird error messages. The IOS version was much smoother. However that’s not a deal breaker for me either. I hope Brother will fix those issues soon and anyway printing from a mobile device is nice, but not critical. Note that the printing is done using wifi (so you need to be on the same network as the printer) or NFC or bluetooth so there is no ‘cloud’ printing (i.e. print from anywhere on your printer).

    One other nice feature is that the ink cartridges are located on the front so replacement is very easy. On other printers I’ve had you had to open the printer and replace the cartridges inside. This is NOT the case here – access is super easy.

    So bottom line if you are looking for a home use printer at a reasonable price, I recommend this one. The highs are:
    * good price (you can find it for less than list price)
    * good print quality for both photos and text
    * quiet and relatively fast (for a home printer)
    * compact
    * mobile app
    * super easy setup – supports automated wifi setup (WPS)

    lows are:
    * low capacity paper holder
    * print trey doesn’t look that sturdy…
    * mobile app needs some work (on Android)

    Buggy firmware update tool but great printer nonetheless, January 4, 2014

    We’ve had this printer for several months now and while I personally regularly print to a laser printer my partner uses this one as his primary printer. We also use it for printing photos as this does a very nice job at that (I wouldn’t want pictures from a laser printer to hang on the wall – that’s just not right).

    This unit is fairly compact so we store it in a slide-out drawer on a shelf. Given paper comes out the front we only need to slide it out when scanning something (which is not that frequent). In other words, it sits cozy on the shelf the majority of the time. We also connect to it via WiFi so we only had to deal with staying near an electrical outlet and not worry about distance from our PCs. My partner also connected this to Google’s shared print service so now he can print to it from his cell phone wherever we’re at.

    For printing, the built-in duplex feature cuts down on paper and print speeds are quick, especially when compared with the laser printer (no need to wait for it to warm up and such). Pictures on the wall are top quality with one of our friends asking if we had them printed at a drugstore.

    My only complaint, and this is minor, is that the firmware update tool that you install on your PC consistently errors out at the end of the update process. The printer takes the update without issue but the update tool loses connection at the end and throws an error. Annoying, but the update does complete (and by extension, doesn’t brick the printer) so minor inconvenience.

    All-in-all if you’re looking for a good printer to have for the family to print recipes, emails, homework assignments or pictures, or your small business for invoices and letters, this is a good choice. I’d recommend it to my mom, and that says a lot.

    Price is was great, works great! For the money, and for average home use printing, it is worth it. My wife does not appreciate the basic adjustments to the types of paper/photo paper being used.
