What customers say about BUFFALO AirStation N600 – wireless router – 802.11 a/b/g/n – desktop, wall-mountable [WZR-600DHP] –?

  1. Belkin, Or Linksys. Either one will work and you can find them under 100 at any wal-mart.

They are the best because they are well know and have great support backing them. I have yet to have problems with my linksys router and I purchased it almost 2 years ago.

  2. The cheapest one you can find! I got a cheap $ 20 one, with a 2 linux pc’s a vista pc, and xp.

  3. There several brands that you can choose and the price is quite acceptable and below 100 bucks (see some at http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_link_3588682_1/002-5091798-5620008?ie=UTF8&node=284716&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=gp-center-5&pf_rd_r=0AGMNVX8EJR7PWCJQ7T2&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=290734901&pf_rd_i=172504)
To share your printer, Just plug in your printer to one of your 3 computers and share it using File Printer Sharing feature of Windows.

  4. Best router is an older WRT54G with a 3rd party firmware

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G

the newer ( last year and a half) are a cheaper made product not modifiable

Linksys now sells the older Linksys WRT54G router as the
    WRT54GL router ( L is for Linux)

    http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Cisco-WRT54GL-Wireless-G-Broadband-Compatible/dp/B000BTL0OA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-4750960-7523840?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1189310681&sr=1-1

The third party firmware allows a number of very advanced features ( including much higher power )
Best well known of the 3rd party firmware is sveasoft

    http://www.sveasoft.com/

    Open source ddwrt

    http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/ddwrt.php

sveasoft does give out some earlier versions for free

You will invalidate your linksys warranty
however it is more than commonly done with few problems.
Best not to push the power all the way up. 1/2 way is fine.

    A good resource

    One point here.
In terms of the fantasy speed ratings of routers.
At the most speeds are 1/2 of stated claims due to overhead
Even the older b standard is faster than most broadband internet speeds
Distance drops rapidly with distance. After 30 feet ( b and g) drops like a stone.
In order to get extended speed you have to use the same propietary adapters
If you have one non of these wireless adapter it may bring the whole network done to the lower level
Don’t know about N. I see that you have vista. Vista drivers for wi fi are very limited . You may have to get n cards

    http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/ProductList.aspx?m=v&g=d&cid=711&f=86p

    http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:f8DufZqBTRMJ:www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_RTM_Hardware_Compatibility_List+vista+hardware+wiki&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=ca&client=firefox-a

Lastly the issue is not so much the router but the router setup

    – change the channel of the router from the default channel 6.
. Neighbors signals will drift in amazing distances . You will get a good signal but no inernet. Channels 1 and 11 are first picks
    – change the ssid even if to add a digit
    – the router should be placed high and uncluterred

a very useful program for wi fi network maintenance and printer sharing is network magic
