There is no simple answer. In ideal locations they will al be much the same. For your usage it will depend on your connection, the density of the walls in your building, the proximity of other equipment etc.

    A Great disappointment, April 28, 2012
    By

This review is from: BUFFALO MiniStation Extreme 1 TB USB 3.0Portable Hard Drive – HD-PZ1U3B (Personal Computers)

This is not the buffalo quality I expect and their warranty is questionable, espeically for their high end Extreme Ministation USB3 product. I purchased this product new on January 8 2012, used it without issues for 3 months, took it on my extended vaction and when I got there I set up the same laptop I always used it with, plugged in the units USB cable and nothing! Its built in light did not light and its harddrive did not make a sound; not a good sign. I plugged in another very old ministation and everything worked fine. Both ministations were backed side-by-side in the same case logic hardsided storage container. I tried everything I could to make it even light, to no avail. I then called their Tech support and was told they would send me a new one through their Warranty RMA procedure. Step 1 requires that I send them a copy of my purchase order – how many people carry a copy of their proof of purchase order with them when they go on vacation? I certainly do not and without it I am dead in the water. In the meantime I read through their “Advance Replacement Warranty agreement, which they require you to agree to before anything happens. To start with they require a payment of $30 as a non-refundable processing and handling fee!!! In addition on the second page of the Agreement they state that you will receive a REFURBISHED unit as a replacement unit! What are they thinking? I carefully made my original purchase decision based on the EXTREME PROECTION offered by this device and I expected far better reliability and performance than I received from this unit. I guess this is what they consider EXTREME … you get to pay $30 for a processing fee to get a refurbished Warranty replacement unit for a 3 month old NEW device covered by their 3 year warranty. Suffice it to say I am very disappointed with both this Company’s policies and the total lack of dependability I received from this unit, plus of course I lose all my important data saved on this device, not to mention the hassel they put you through with their “3 year Warranty” program policies. This will be an on=going process for me and I am not even sure I want to play their game when their best EXTREME product leads you to where I am now at. I only wish I would have known what I am now involved in Before I ever made this purchase!

Solid, pleasant to handle USB3 unit with a 5400RPM Drive, February 11, 2012

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: BUFFALO MiniStation Extreme 1 TB USB 3.0Portable Hard Drive – HD-PZ1U3B (Personal Computers)

Although I appreciate the promised ruggedness and the USB3 connection, the drive is a bit on the slow side. The drive couldn’t keep up with the demand VMWare put on it (Workstation) despite the USB3 connection. My external 2.5″ drives do just fine. As it turns out, the Buffalo has a 5400rpm SATA drive. (I dare you to find that spec on the product page). I haven’t dropped it to test its resilience, but it’s supposed to tolerate drops from up to 2 meters.

Another surprise, the drive din’t fit into a standard Case Logic case. And although I ordered red, Amazon sent a black one.

So overall, the drive did OK. Just didn’t live up to my expectations. Perhaps it’s my fault?

Had it about a month. Gave it a good workout. Works fine so far.
Have only tried USB2; gets ~20 Mbytes/sec (that might be limitted by the host computer).

Note: The built-in cable is only ~5″ long; it does come with an extension cable.

  4. Every wireless router has it’s own unique pros and cons.

Although a particular model may be good for one application, it may suck for another.

I like to read the Amazon reviews of devices before I buy. Even if I don’t buy from Amazon, the actual user reviews will give you a lot of insight on the quality and capabilities of the product.

For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Although WiFi is convenient for mobility, wireless interference can cause it’s connection speed and quality to vary wildly.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely. Remember, this is the speed of the WLAN connection between your WiFi device and the router, not the Internet speed.

You can buy inexpensive prefabricated Ethernet cables in various lengths.http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=ethernet%20patch%20cable&linkCode=ur2&qid=1373073588&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A172456%2Cn%3A172463%2Cn%3A464398%2Ck%3Aethernet%20patch%20cable%2Cp_72%3A1248879011&rnid=1248877011&tag=excharge-20

If it is not feasible to run Ethernet cable the next best option would be a set of powerline network adapters http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

You plug one in by your router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference. There is still overhead in the connection but it is much more stable than WiFi.

    That being said,

For stationary devices I always recommend Ethernet connections, however I realize that this is impractical for devices such as tablets, iPods, cell phones, etc.

For wireless connections, I would look at high performance routers or devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range. The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats or regenerates them to extend the signal range to greater distances.

in any case, You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

High performance routers generally have a much better wireless range than their cheaper competitors. I would recommend these.

    ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router – http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QB1RPY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B006QB1RPY&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

    Or

NETGEAR WNDR4500 Dual Band Wireless- N900 Gigabit Router http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KG44V0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005KG44V0&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

However, Just because a particular wireless router model works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variances in the factors listed above.

Depending on conditions and the area that you wish to cover you may also need a wireless extender.

Here are the two most popular highly rated models on Amazon.

    Securifi Almond – http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0087NZ31S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0087NZ31S&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

    Netgear Universal WN3000RP – http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

No matter what you decide to buy,

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don’t buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. To be sure any device will meet your needs, it is a good idea to download and read the user manual before purchase.

    Good Luck…

  5. Generally, you’d want to go wired if you want gaming. (i.e. get one cable from the router to the computer). why? more speed, less ping, no packet loss.
You should be fine with any of these router’s wireless. Make sure u secure it though so u dont get your wifi used by others

  6. I would get either:

    Ubiquiti AirRouter:
    http://www.amazon.com/AirRouter-802-11g-Featuring-Ubiquiti-AirOS/dp/B007ZJ8KLA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1379176221&sr=8-2&keywords=airrouter

    Or

    Netgear WNR1000:
    http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-RangeMax-WNR1000-Wireless-Router/dp/B00894WP4S/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1379176246&sr=1-6&keywords=router
    Ubiquiti UAP:
    http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-UniFi-Enterprise-System/dp/B004XXMUCQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379176325&sr=8-1&keywords=ubiquiti

And disable the WiFi on the Netgear. With the Ubiquiti enterprise-grade AP you’re not just having full bars in your entire house, but down the block too! :)

The AirRouter by itself would be easier to setup, I’ve heard the UAP can be a pain to setup sometimes if your Java version is incompatible with their setup interface, should be able to find help on Google about that if it does come up.

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers
