‘ayeka’ – our home server
Buffalo wireless Routers

A Linksys NSLU2 network-attached storage device, with a 320Gb Seagate USB hard drive attached. The ‘slug’ (as the NSLU2 is affectionately known amongst hobbyists) has the ‘Unslung’ alternative firmware loaded, which allows for additional software to be installed. It now acts as our intranet and e-mail server, and I’m working on a few other applications for it – not bad for a machine the height of a Coke can…

(Update (2007/01/06): I’ve now moved ‘ayeka’ to the rack next to the trolley where this photo was taken, and added a Pertelian USB LCD display for system stats, etc. See other ‘nslu2’-tagged photos in my photoset for views of the new setup.)

(Update: (2011/01/22): The "slug" has now been replaced by a Synology DS110j NAS device – see this photo for the new setup. In fact, the PC next to the "slug" in this photo is now out of action too – all change…)

  1. make sure its a valid address your trying to open, try other stuff such as email or yahoo instant messanger to see if its all traffic or just the browser. From a command line see if you can ping the router ( ie..ping 192.168.1.1 ) (or whatever the router IP is, use IPCONFIG /ALL from a command line to get the default gateway / router IP)
then try and ping outside such as ping yahoo.com. if it fails check for firewalls, disable them for the time being. Make sure you don’t have a proxy configured under IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections LAN Settings…or if so make sure its configured correctly

  2. You may want to change the channel that your access point is useing. I would recommend channel 11. this is because most people use 1 – 6.. and that means that anything but 11 will interfear with those other users..

Make sure you change your SSID on the wireless AP to something other than default, then set up your laptop wireless profile to match the SSID that you have selected. Also, be sure that you are getting a good IP address / gateway from the AP. This can be done by clicking on Start / Run; type cmd and press enter. When the command line box opens, type ipconfig /all ….. Here, you should see your wireless adapter, and that it has good IP information.

  3. Try to Open your browser 15 minutes later you turn the router on.
