live.pirillo.com – geeks.pirillo.com – For years, I used a computer on my home network as a file server. I then used that file server to share files throughout my network. Then as NAS prices started to drop, they became a more feasible option for me. Some of you may be using Windows Home Server to serve up your files. You may want to think about getting a NAS device. This video was originally shared on blip.tv by l0ckergn0me with a No license (All rights reserved) license.

Data Protection and Backup

TeraStation 5400 features Buffalo’s replication technology providing easy and high performance data replication from one Buffalo NAS device to another Buffalo NAS device over the network or the Internet. This offers real-time synchronous replication of data, providing easy, continuous data protection in the event of data loss. If your system configuration includes data replication from one TeraStation 5400 unit to another, you can set up failover to automatically switch main operation over to the redundant TeraStation if the main unit ever becomes inaccessible. Within one minute, the backup TeraStation automatically assumes the role of the main TeraStation 5400 with no disruption and no IT intervention. Data can be continuously accessed without any notice of the failover.

Additionally, TeraStation 5400 is bundled with 10 licenses of NovaBACKUP Business Essentials, providing a complete, all-in-one data protection solution for small and medium businesses serious about protecting digital assets. Back up PCs, storage servers, Exchange servers, and SQL databases.

Storage Virtualization

Configure TeraStation 5400 as an iSCSI target to add affordable virtualized storage to your business network. Storage virtualization serves to decrease IT spending by maximizing the resources offered by modern servers while providing affordable server scalability and reliability. A virtualized environment removes a significant amount of server dependence, shifting the burden to the storage devices.

Remote File Access

TeraStation 5400 offers multiple ways to remotely access and share your important data for enhanced collaboration and productivity. With WebAccess and FTP/SFTP servers, you can securely access and share files with anyone outside the local network. Trusted recipients can access selected files from anywhere over the Internet and with WebAccess files can also be accessed remotely from tablet and smartphone devices.

I was extremely pleased with the product but most of all with the support I received from Kerry at Buffalo Tech Support. He was extremely patient and made sure he answered all of my questions. I received a response within thirty minutes (if not immediately) if I contacted tech support.

I have to say that at this time I have nothing negative to say about the Buffalo TeraStation 5400. It is a solid piece of equipment. It is very intuitive and I was able to set it up quickly. I setup drive mappings to everyone’s personal folder and I no longer worry that I’m going to lose data on any device. I do have to work on a backup solution for the drive though. I also like that I can remotely access the unit without messing around with any router settings. The remote access software is in Beta, but works well. I would recommend this unit for anyone looking at data availability. Oh I did forget one thing. The iTunes server works well, but the Apple iTunes software is unable to view the album cover art. I have no problems with Windows Media player. Let’s hope Apple fixes this issue soon. So far their latest update has not.

disk failed after 30 some days and the only response you get is their automated email. don’t know if Synology is any better, but they can’t possibly have worse support.

  4. Depends on the external drive. If it’s USB plugged into your PC then the PC must be on. If it’s a network storage device plugged into your router or switch then it is available to any system on the network.
