Question by cave_canem90: How can I control my Canon scanner from my laptop?
I have a Canon MP600 (all-in-one) connected directly to a desktop PC running WinXP. I also have a laptop running WinXP that connects to the desktop and printer via a wireless home network.

I can print and scan from the desktop, but I can only print from the laptop. I cannot figure out how to get the MP600 to scan something and then to save it directly to the laptop hard drive.

Any suggestions on how to make this work or on what I might be overlooking?

You generally can’t do this the way you’re trying.

You can only share something over a network connection based on an agreement over network protocols. Most printers and scanners know nothing about living on a network, so they can’t help you here.

You can share your printer over the network only because Windows has that capability built-in… it’s WIndows doing the job of a “print sever” for you (at least for devices that can run the SMB networking protcol). Windows had no such server built-in to deal with scanners.

You MIGHT be able to get this kind of functionality by adding an external server device. For example, I have a small Ethernet device here that hooks up to two USB devices, and provides that “agreement” between devices across the network. I use it as a print server, which allows both Windows and Linux machines to access the printer, without having to leave a whole PC powered on to provide this function. And it actually works better, since Linux works better with some more standardized networking protocols than the current state of SMB networking.

Anyway, I use a TrendNet TE100-MP2U print server… and it claims to support scanners and hard drives, too, though I have not use it for such. Along with the standard network protocols, it runs some kind of “USB spoofing” protocol for Windows machines, so they think the printer is directly on USB (Windows is bit stupid about networks, largely due to Microsoft’s apparent need to reinvent everything, rather than just use standards). The TE100’s around $ 60, uses a wired network connection… you can get wireless servers, too. Most companies making these maintain a list of the hardware they have tested it with, so you might want to see if your MFP is on the list.

I bought this printer for $25. It is awful. Constantly getting errors saying the “holder” is in the wrong position, the “top is open”, even when it’s blatantly closed, and paper jams with ONE piece of of paper in the tray. Stay away and don’t be a cheap a** like me!
