    Be Sure you Need Only Single Function! Choose carefully., December 6, 2013

    Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)

    HP has come out with a new line of Energy Star Efficient “PageWide Technology” printers the later which it claims boosts print speeds upto 70 ppm. The HP Officejet Pro X451dn Wireless is a sharp looking printer weighing 38 pounds with a footprint of 26 x 26 x 15 extended. Set-up was a breeze taking under 15 minutes. This is a single-function printer. It does not fax or scan. Printing functions are displayed on a 2″ adjustable angle display with 9 button functions of: Home, Back Cancel, Up, Select, Down, Help, Wireless, ePrint. Wireless needs setup. Memory is 512MB. Connections are single Ethernet, USB Hi-Speed 2.0 Host and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. The “Page Wide Technology” proports to allow the printer to print at even faster speed than listed in this review. The printer is ready to go immediately after hitting the “on” button (unlike my present HP printer which takes nearly 5 minutes to warm up). Printing a photo off the internet proved a disaster with ink dripping off the photo paper when finished. The photo was perfect in detail and color.

    It does print double sided and on different sized papers, labels, cards and envelopes. Plug it into your ethernet, electrical outlet and connect it to your network.
    Networked computers and mobile devises including smartphones and notebooks print select from Wi-FI, HP ePrint, HP Google Cloud Print, Apple AirPrint(tm) supported on ePrint Mobile Apps, Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista, Windows XP (SP3, 32-bit), Mac OS X v10.6, Mac OS X Lion, Mac OS X Mountain Lion, or Linux. Note: HP ePrint requires not only an Internet connection to the printer but also an Account Registration with HP Web Services. (hp.com/go/mobile-printing-solutions)

    Good for a network of 5-10 users. This printer has a 500-sheet tray and printing volume of 500-2800 pages per month with an upper limit of upto 50,000 pages per month. I am hopeful to know that the printer supposedly prints just over 9,000 pages per black XL cartridge and over 6,000 per XL color cartridge! I am fortunate and pleased to be offered this printer through Vine; my intended use is to give it rigorous testing alongside my sister and her kids who will use this through school assignments and the normal running of a teenage household with various mobile, desk, laptop and household demands. I’ll report back as it goes through its paces and especially if it fails to measure up either in terms of cost or performance. Paper jams may get interesting and I will report back on this too.

    Print speeds in either black or color are listed by HP as:
    upto 55ppm in draft
    upto 36ppm in normal resolution.

    There are 4 needed replacement print cartidges:
    HP 970 Black Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge (~3000 pages);
    HP 971 Cyan Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge;
    HP 971 Magenta Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge;
    HP 971 Yellow Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge: composite yield (~2500 pages);

    HP 970XL Black Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge (advertised as 9200 page yield and $100 on Amazon Prime);
    HP 971XL Cyan Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge;
    HP 971XL Magenta Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge;
    HP 971XL Yellow Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge: composite yield (~6600 pages).

    If I calculate the per page cost of a black XL cartridge at $100 with Amazon Prime, and I assume the advertised 9,000 page yield for black, my pp cost is .011, just over 1 cent per page. That’s a nice price cost point whether you are a business or a family just trying to get the kids papers printed. I bought and recommend a spare set of cartridges before the notoriously small “set up” cartridges run dry. Prime is cheaper than either buying print cartridges direct from HP or from a drugstore late one night and paying the full $120 + tax price tag for just Black!

    What’s in the Box:
    HP Officejet Pro X451dn Printer;
    Setup Officejet Pro X Ink Cartridge Black, Magenta, Yellow, Cyan
    power cord, phone cord
    Installation guide
    Software CD-ROMs for: Windows and Mac printer drivers, and User’s Guide.
    Setup poster
    NO CABLE

    One-Year: Exchange Warranty and Technical Phone/Chat/email support.

    But I’ll admit. Once you’ve gotten use to the convenience of a fax and scanner it’s pretty hard to lose them. So I’ll say, I recommend this printer for use at home or in a small office needing a simple single-function printer as a back up for a full functioning printer. As a backup, it is a fast, economical printer with good print quality. And we’ll be sure to print any other photos off the internet in draft/economy mode.

    I waiver between 4 and 3 stars. I have a hard time taking off that last star because I find I really am not a single function person. This printer is 4 stars for you if you need this narrow approach; it is not so good if you occasionally need to scan and fax. On the other hand, I don’t have a problem taking off that…

    I replaced an older HP color laser that had gotten flakey. While initialization takes a while to complete the printer is very fast, very quiet and has excellent output. I did not get wireless as my printer is plugged into my network backbone. My Lantronics XPrintServe immediately recognized the printer and it was available to all my iOS devices. Highly recommended. Also flawlessly used by 4 Macs in the house running Lion and Mountain Lion.

    Solid Printer for a Small- to Medium-Sized Office, November 29, 2013

    Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)

    There was a time when HP printers were the only real choice for anyone who really needed a reliable printer with accurate color reproduction and decent printing speeds. HP still makes some of the very best printers on the market, though others have gained a lot of ground on them and the choices are no longer cut and dry. HP’s OfficeJet Pro X451 is a new high-speed inkjet printer that is designed to replace color laser printers. It is not an all-in-one device – it is just a printer – but what it does, it does very well.

    Before I get too deep into this, there is something that merits mention – do not confuse the terms “wireless printer” and “WiFi printer”. This printer is a wireless printer – it is not set up for WiFi connectivity and as such it requires a wired connection, either to an individual system, an Ethernet wall port or a direct connection to a switch or router. “Wireless” in this case means that the printer is accessible over a network and does not need to be directly connected to the system. This is the wrong printer to buy if you want it connected to a WiFi network and want to move it around without connecting to an Ethernet port somewhere.

    Setup was easy but it took a long time. Once the printer was unpacked I followed the directions that came with it for installing the ink cartridges and loading paper. I turned it on and it prompted for a few set-up options and then launched into the longest calibration cycle I have ever seen – 8 separate stages of calibration and 8 sheets of paper later it was finally ready to use.

    The printer comes with a CD for installing the drivers and printer management software needed for interfacing with this printer. I used a USB connection and found that the printer was not recognized before it finished calibration (which makes sense except that the printer pauses in between stages of calibration and then resumes, so it was not clear that it was done). To install, there are two options – download the latest and greatest drivers directly from HP or use what’s on the CD that came with it. I downloaded the latest drivers and the process was relatively quick.

    Once all set up, the printer was more than eager to please and I made some good observations. First, this is a really quiet printer. I have never had a printer that operates so quietly when printing. If you need a quiet printer that does not wake the whole office when it prints, this is a good printer.

    Second, I found that the print quality is phenomenal. I printed a large and detailed picture on plain paper and the result was nothing short of great. The color balance is there and the details are clean and crisp. There’s little about which to complain when looking for quality output but if you really want mind-blowing prints, put in photo paper and specify as much in the print preferences – the results on photos are spectacular, suitable for framing and mounting. I do not know yet how well the brightness and clarity will hold over time, though – many inkjet prints fade with time and I do not know how well HP’s inks will maintain their integrity for finished prints.

    Finally, this is a FAST printer. Inkjets as a whole have gotten faster without losing quality, and HP definitely has put some effort into squeezing speed from this printer. The advertised speed of this printer is approximately 35 ppm for black prints, and in draft mode that is probably pretty close. I did not send a large multi-page job to it for testing so I cannot really quantify the speed, but it definitely is faster than most other inkjets I have used in the past.

    This is a very solid and sturdy printer. It was made to last for years under a reasonably heavy load and it should serve an office environment without too much trouble. I do wonder how long the ink will hold out once I get through the initial cartridges, though. I do not yet have a good measure for this yet.

    The HP OfficeJet Pro X451 is a solid and well-designed inkjet that is intended for moderate office use. It is a solid printer that prints fast and generates very high-quality output, and it does this very quietly compared to most other printers. If you have a medium-sized office and you want the quality of a color laser but don’t want the expense, this may very well be the printer to meet your needs.
