Monoprice 109964 IR Extender Over HDMI

Monoprice 109964 IR Extender Over HDMI

So you’ve got your HDMI splitter sending your video signal-Inch the den so you can watch the game in peace. But the cable box is in the other room and you can’t channel surf between the various games? It sounds like you need this IR Extender Over HDMI from Monoprice! Most other IR extenders are either wireless which can cause interference issues with other wireless equipment or hard wired meaning you need-Inch run another cable through your walls. This extender is completely different in that it use s your existing HDMI cable-Inch carry the IR signal from one room-Inch the other. The kit consists of two small HDMI modules that fit on each end of your existing HDMI cable. Each module has a 3. 5mm jack into which you plug the IR receiver or transmitter module. The receiver module accepts the IR signal from your remote control while the transmitter module regenerates the IR signal and beams it at the IR sensor of your cable box or other piece of equipment. This IR extender supports IR signals from 30~60KHz which means that it works with “dual band” IR devices. The receiver module has a 48″ cable and the transmitter module has a 56″ cable. The kit comes with two pieces of double-sided adhesive tape so you can fix the transmitter and receiver modules into place. Note that-Inch transmit the IR signal over the HDMI cable the switches on both modules must be set-Inch the “IR” position. If both switches are set-Inch the “CEC” position the cable will pass CEC signals instead of IR signals which HDMI cables do by default so the “CEC” position is in effect the “OFF” position. If one switch is set-Inch “CEC” and the other-Inch “IR” neither CEC nor IR signals will be passed so ensure both switches are set the same. Have added a TV in our living room, connected to the cable box in the den. To avoid buying a splitter (which seem to be cheaply built and burn out), the den TV has been connected to the RGB HD connections on the cable box, the new TV is connected using a $15 40′ HDMI cable. You should try your cable box before buying parts, as some cable boxes will only output on one connection! Ours works and shows the exact same content on both outputs, so no HDMI splitter needed. The last piece of the puzzle was getting the remote to work. Got this IR extender, as it eliminates either running another cable or using a more costly RF transmitter setup. It all works wonderfully, over one cable, for $40! A buddy uses Monoprice HDMI splitters and switches and recommends their products, too.

FYI, people reviewing here and elsewhere have griped about the plug location on the HDMI connector. On my LCD TV and cable box it is no issue and doesn’t block the adjacent port, but I can see how it might cause some problems for some. Check out the pictures here and on the manufacturers website, look at your hardware and determine if this will work for you. Don’t complain and give bad reviews if you buy something that you could have researched but didn’t.

I needed a way to control a Uverse receiver from another room where I had a TV. I tried a RF remote but found it to be unreliable. I then tried the Monoprice IR extender and it worked perfectly on the first try. The HDMI cable I used was 50′ long and it caused no problems for the image or the function of the IR remote.
There was no documentation included but installation was simple. Since the IR transmitter and receiver connects to the side of the HDMI adapter, you might not be able to connect to some devices if there is something close to the HDMI connector on one side.

If you already use a hdmi cable for other room viewing, this is best solution to remote remote. I bought cheapest version on web and works perfectly. Much cheaper than IR RF transmitter our remote battery sensor/transmitter. I have used them all.

  4. The software my not come stock, but it can either be used as a router or repeater by using the proper software, if not, hey, that’s retarded! go to netgear website and get the software.
