Question by Pixie: Why does my wireless router keep losing signal?
We just brought a Netgear Wireless Router about a month and a half ago, and recently it’s started having issues. It will lose signal randomly, but the computer connected directly to it will have no issues. It’s only the laptops and xbox that loses the connection. What could be the problem?

Answer by ?
If the computer connected directly to it (I’m assuming it’s connected via ethernet) is not losing its connection but your laptops and xbox (likely connected via wifi?) are, this has to be a problem with the wireless portion. This could be a problem within the router itself (some settings, such as enabled UPNP, can mess it up); a problem in the wireless machines (connection time-out due to inactivity or poor signal); or any of a wide range of problems. Try only having one machine connected to the internet at once (especially via wireless connections) because sometimes routers don’t sustain multi-port connections very well.

great for those who can’t get internet access at home…, December 14, 2010

If you are somewhere where you use a wireless 3G or 4G wireless usb modem to connect to the web…. then this is for you. I live out in the country where the ONLY choice for internet is a wireless usb modem or satelite…which sucks and is slow so the usb was the way to go. I use sprint sierra usb 598 series modem to connect.

Whats great is that its pretty simple to set up and you can share your connection wirelessly with wifi or with one of 4 ethernet ports in the back. This is great if you have a PS3 like me or a WII, XBOX 360. You can be connected wirelessly with your ps3 and someone else can be on the laptop or whatever.

The only 2 downsides are that

    1. you have to use the usb modem on your laptop first to move around and find where you get a consistantly stronger signal from your wireless provider…. because

    2. there is no signal strength meter on the router telling you how strong your connection is to the internet. Once you find that sweet spot though… then all of your wireless wifi will benefit because the router delivers a nice strong signal to them but again the key is finding that sweet spot with your laptop first then its easy from there.

    You can go here: […]

to see a list of supported usb modems because if its NOT on that list, then it will not work. Also do some searching… I got this brand new for $90 shipped.

MBNR 3000 Not Compatible with UML 290, July 19, 2012

OK – I’ve spent the last 2 days exchanging emails with Netgear Technical Support. They forwarded me a telephone number to speak with a live person; and I just got off the phone with them.

He’s a bit more of the back story:

I bought a Netgear MBNR 3000 3G/4G router to interface with my Pantech UML 290 4G modem. It”s (the modem) is suppose to be supported in the latest firmware update (V1.0.0.72_2.0.12NA), which is installed. I set up the router using the setup wizard. It auto setup all the access information for the Verizon Network, and it recognized the UML290. In fact, the router status pager (looking at router settings) specifically stes that the UML209 is recognized. However, when the router attempted to connect to the Verizon Network it was unable to make the connection. Modem (UML290) works fine on my laptop.

I’ve tried a number of different approaches to get it to work, but to no avail. So as I mentioned, I just got off the phone with Netgear Technical Support. There answer to me (after 30 minutes of conversation & several supervisors later) was:

We are sorry, but your modem, the UML 290, is NOT compatible with our product (MBNR3000). I’m confused because the Netgear knowledge base has the firmware update at the following URL:

    […] . Oh well!

That’s it – end of story.

So – if you have the UML290, don’t buy the MBNR3000 – it won’t work. To bad, I really liked the product.
