Question by Ryan: How do I connect all of my computers to the wireless router?
We just received Charter internet and it only works for ONE computer, and it has to be plugged in with the Ethernet cord. Before we switched from AT&T to Charter, I got a Netgear wireless router (with 4 extra internet ports on the back) and it worked just fine.

When I take the ethernet cord and hook it up to the Netgear router, not even the computer that works with the internet will connect. It DOES show up on the wireless connections icon, but despite the strong signal it gets, it will not connect. All it says is that there is Wireless available, and even though it says connected, it says “No internet access”.

EXTRA INFORMATION: I had a cord hooked up to the back of the wireless router and went directly into my Xbox360 and it won’t work like it used to.

Can someone help me connect all of my computers to it again?

Please do not say to restart my computer or the router, or to do any of the obvious simple tasks. Trust me, they have been done.

You need to power cycle the cable modem every time you plug it into a different device. This is a required step. Additionally, what type of ATT internet service did you have prior? If it was DSL, then your router is still configured to work with a DSL service. You are plugging it into a Cable internet service now, so it still being configured for DSL means it wont work. Log into the router and change it from a PPPoE connection type to a DHCP connection type.

You should know that Netgear does not sell this modem to individuals, only ISPs. At least that’s what Netgear keeps telling me. It’s pretty frightening when a company that is supposed to be a major internet player can’t do a Google search to see that over 100 stores sell this modem directly to users.

My CMD31T died six weeks after it was purchased. One day it was working fine and the next day I had no internet connection with my ISP. First I called my ISP and did all the stuff they asked. Then my ISP sent out a technician with a network analyzer. My connection was fine, the modem was not. Then the nightmare begins.

The Netgear support number connects to a call center in India. Everyone there follows the script EXACTLY. The first Customer Service Representative (CSR) told me that Netgear does not do support for this modem, I have to call my ISP. I call my ISP to check and they confirmed that since this was a privately purchased modem that Netgear was responsible for support. The second CSR had me do a bunch of diagnostic steps. Nothing worked, but since I could still see the GUI in the modem, the modem MUST be fine. The third CSR told me to call the ISP and when I asked to speak to a supervisor, blew me off. The forth CSR said someone from Netgear would call me. I’m still waiting for an RMA so I can return this modem two weeks later.

BTW, forget any support if you run Linux. You can tell the CSR your IP address, DNS, and default route, (which are MUCH easier to find in Linux) but if you are not running windoze they tell you they can’t do support.

The technician from the ISP recommended Arris or Motorola. I bought a Motorola modem because I might not ever get an RMA from Netgear.

If you buy this modem and it fails you will not get any support from Netgear.

    9 March 2012 Update:

My first Email contact with Netgear was 22 February 2012. I have sent them my Amazon purchase receipt twice. Still no RMA from Netgear. I am sending an Email to Netgear Technical Support every few days telling them I still have not received an RMA. If I ever receive an RMA I will post how long it took.

So far my Motorola SURFboard SBG901 is working O.K. It’s not DOCSIS 3.0 but at least it works.

    22 March 2012 Update:

It looks like Netgear is never going to send me an RMA. The only response I get from Chithra or Vishnu or Simbhu or Arif is “Please wait so that they can get the necessary details from them to assist you better.” I will be happy to post or forward any of these Emails from Netgear.

Netgear automatically closes any support case in seven days if you do not reply to their Email. They are hoping I will get tired of waiting and just write off the $90 I paid for the CMD31T. Please think twice before buying any Netgear product

    24 March 2012 Update;

Check out the comment from Netgear!!! They won’t respond to my support case but they sure as heckfire will try and spin bad PR!!! Oh, IPV6 is the problem? Then why has my Motorola modem worked perfectly the day after my Netgear modem failed? Maybe Motorola makes a better product than Netgear. Or maybe my ISP temporarily switched to IPV6 and then waited until I called to tell them I bought a Motorola modem and immediately switched back to IPV4 so the Motorola modem worked. Hmmm… I wonder?

My father in law bought this as TWC has told us they are now going to charge a 4$/mo fee for their modems and he wasnt down with that so he bought this. His speeds are triple what his TWC account services are supposed to be. Probably because TWC cant regulate the speeds on it with their account system. Only thing is the desc says this modem isnt supported by TWC? I wonder if thats a deal between Netgear and TWC so their users dont switch to this modem and unlock full speed. I will post an update if anything goes bad with this product and TWC.

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Netgear High Speed Cable Modem – DOCSIS 3.0 (CMD31T) (Personal Computers)

Bought it for my the comcast cable internet. Comcast has certified this. And the box in which this comes boldly displays the certified by comcast mark.
But It barely worked I kept having troubles like losing connection and finally one day it completely stopped working.
The Comcast technician who visited my place told me many other people faced the same problem with this one but Comcast refused to officially remove this from the list of certified modems.
Finally now I am using a surfboard and it does not have any problem.

  4. You do put the router on the Charter internet modem. When you do, make sure both are turned OFF. Then start the modem. Wait for the lights to settle down. Connect the router. Wait for the lights to settle down. I’d also unbend a paper clip and while power is live, push the reset button with it in the little hole in the back. This will reset the router to default configuration.

Then connect that one computer too it using an Ethernet wire. It will need rebooted if you don’t shut it off first. You could get away with ipconfig /renew on the command line but it is better to just reboot for most people.

Once it is up, open a command line. (windows key R then cmd in the box). Type ipconfig. Make sure you see an address for both your computer and a default gateway.

Open a browser. Put that default gateway address in the URL bar and press enter. You will get to the routers login screen. The user name and password is usually some combination of admin and blank. There are lots of web sites with a list of these. Then run the wizards.

The biggy is turn the modem OFF when connecting. IF you do not, when you move the wire from the computer to the modem, the ISP will ignore you for a default of 3600 seconds. That is, it won’t figure you are gone until it hasn’t heard from your computer for 1 hour. Rebooting the modem fixes that.

  5. Sorry, some ppl just can’t read—doesn’t that piss u off?

The router was configured for AT&T.
The problem is most likely an IP conflict.
Connect ur computer directly to the modem.
    restart everything
Open a cmd window –> click START, type CMD, enter
    type IPCONFIG enter
look at the default gateway IP address — 192.168.1.1 — the 3rd octet is important.
The 4th will always be 1 or 255
connect the router to the modem and ur computer to the router
    restart everything
    repeat the CMD routine
compare the IP addresses – if they r the same u have an IP conflict.

access the router and change the IP address of the router so the 3rd number is different than the modem – any number 0 to 255 will work — save the changes and restart everything.

repeat the CMD routine to verify u have a new Gateway IP

    Everything should work now.

NOTE – if u have set static IPs for ur games or other things u will have to change those also along with ur port forwarding or port triggering and also any MAC filtering.

It might be easier to contact Charter and ask how to change the IP address for the modem – then u wont have to do all the above.
