I am a long time fan of the ReadyNAS product line. I have had a NV+ (Sparc processor) for years, and was ready for an upgrade. I went with the smaller of the 300 series units; a step above the consumer grade entry level model. This is even better than my first one. Setup is extremely easy. Right out of the box you getkey services such as HTTP/HTTPS, file shares, FTP, RSYNC, Time Machine and more. And with some free add ons, I also now have VPN and the Plex media server. Netgear has continued improving this product line, and really has a great product for consumers and small business alike.

Beware: no encryption option, August 14, 2013

This is nice product with many new features. However: there is no real-time encryption.
    The product description state:
” is the first in its class to feature continuous data protection along with real-time anti-virus and native encryption.”
    (Same here: http://www.netgear.com/landing/storage/for_business.html#1)
I’ve updated to the latest firmware and the antivirus is there but there is no encryption option at all!
The main reason I’ve bought ReadyNAS 312 is to be able to meet my company’s encryption requirements. And there is no such option.
Very disappointing and sounds like a false advertising (states an non existing option).

From setup to customization, it was a breeze. I hope Netgear keeps turning out great products like just as they have in the past.

  4. SAN by far. 3000 clients is a lot. A SAN is basically a bunch of file servers linked to external storage/raid devices. You can get two external WD drives of 1.5 or 2TB each and link them to a file server. Or you can get raid boxes each around 2TB. Raid boxes are better for redundancy purposes.

2.4 TB will give each client only 800 mb of storage space if you use disk quotas to prevent them from going over that. Does that sound about right? If users only store documents and pdf’s and stuff that should be plenty but some might complain if they like to store music, videos, photos ect.

Anyway a SAN would be the best if you have the resources and money. Or you can have 4 super high performance servers each storing 1.5ish TB and link them together to back each other up in a mirror raid configuration if one of them fails ect. But that’s basically a small SAN anyway.
