Question by franky198666: NAS and SAN?
What is the difference between a network-attached storage and a storage area network?

Best answer:

Answer by reggie
Network-attached storage (NAS) is a file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to heterogeneous network clients.

In computing, a storage area network (SAN) is an architecture to attach remote computer storage devices (such as disk arrays, tape libraries and optical jukeboxes) to servers in such a way that, to the operating system, the devices appear as locally attached. Although cost and complexity is dropping, as of 2007, SANs are still uncommon outside larger enterprises.

By contrast to a SAN, network-attached storage (NAS) uses file-based protocols such as NFS or SMB/CIFS where it is clear that the storage is remote, and computers request a portion of an abstract file rather than a disk block.

Drive is already in use., July 11, 2013

I buy a lot from Amazon. Three years ago I purchased Netgear Duo, it has been working great since then.
I decided to purchase another NAS that would hold 4TB and would cost less than $300. This was a perfect choice.
It arrived, I hooked it up, it was immediately found by my network computers. I copied files from another NAS and connected a USB drive. Great.
Issues started two days later. The mapped Windows 7 and Windows 8 drives started to disconnect and when I clicked it, it kept saying that the drive is already in use (WTF?).

    1. I remapped, restarted, remapped…same effect. Eventually, after several clicks it would connect.
    2. I tried mapping NAS drives on my iMAC and Ubuntu desktop, same problem.
    3. I upgraded firmware on the device, no change.
    4. Next, I contacted support during business hours, got a message that the office is closed (5pm EST, their office is open until 6pm Pacific time)but if I leave a message, they would get back to me within 24 hours. I left two messages two days apart.
It’s been four days and so far no one called me back.
So, I am returning it to Amazon and will try Synology 213j, we’ll see.

I found lots of posts with users complaining about this very issue. I’m convinced that the unit design has flaws. Too bad because this little sucker is packed with really cool features, great web interface, attractive casing. Just wanted to share my experience with potential buyers.

    Nice and elegant design.
The QTS 4.0 firmware design is fancy and user friendly. Hardware is similar with the previous version which I owned, but with the hot swappable tray and white color. Running stably and quiet. Mobile app is very useful allowing you to manage and access the files remotely. The drop box like design, QSync, is a powerful alternative to the Dropbox.
