This small, inexpensive antenna works surprisingly well in my urban location. I live in a center-city area with signals coming from several directions, and I had severe ghosting problems with my analog rabbit ears. I was prepared to buy a rotating medium directional rooftop antenna (per antenna.org recommendation for my location) when I decided to try this first- very glad I did. I get all my local digital stations (all transmitters are within 20 miles or so), with only one of them coming in weak (occasional pixellating and sound glitches). Not ideal, but 100% better than my analog reception. It is a little fussy with placement- the directions say that flat installation is preferred, but mine works better hung high on the wall. It looks a little strange, sort of like a floating laptop hovering on the wall, but it sure beats paying those crooks at the cable company.

See more details under my RCA ANT1500 review which outshines this RCA ANT1400.

Long story short: Location–Bayside, Queens, NY, 11 miles east of main NYC digital towers. Only brought in 14 channels (some very weak) compared to the 35 channels (mostly strong) that the ANT1500 brought in. Moving it around and rescanning several times did not help that much. Note: Channels include subchannels.

Guess size does make a difference as the ANT1400 was smaller and cheesier compared to the ANT1500.

Avoid this antenna unless you are really close to the towers you are interested in.

I installed one of these and I am now enjoying all but one of my local DTV stations with perfect reception. I watched Monday Night Football and the World Series in perfect high definition with Dolby sound. At least one network station offers a local DTV weather channel 24/7 by combining local news and Accuweather resources, much better than “your local on the 8s.” Home Shopping Network has a local DTV broadcast–I’m not a customer, but it’s a positive sign that a non-traditional station is in the DTV broadcast market. In an urban or suburban environment, there’s a good chance this little RCA unit is all the antenna you’ll need. And it’s only $15. If you need more antenna, you can always return it, keep it as a backup, whatever. You’ve spent almost nothing. One month of basic cable costs 5x more and the value of the added programming is questionable. Agree with other reviewers–I’m through with paying the Cable TV highwaymen.

  4. Well, you have two issues not one. First, the router / access point will need an outdoor antenna which is elevated high enough to be “line of site” for those 5 blocks. That really isn’t all that difficult if you are in flat territory or live on a hill! There are several companies that make these devices.
    Check with http://tranzeo.com or http://proxim.com or http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5679/ps5861/product_data_sheet09186a00802252e1.html
    etc.

However, to receive and connect to that AP the other end has to also be able to reach that 5blocks. A normal computer wifi card won’t! So you need to add a directional radio card / antenna to your computer as well! It also has to be “line of site”. If you are indoors, that will be very difficult! You can get CPEs (client premise equipment) which connects outdoors and brings the wireless indoors on ethernet but it isn’t portable! Bottom line, you won’t do this with off the shelf gear like linksys or netgear! You can check http://radiolabs.com for some cards that might help but you won’t find those at your local stores! Sorry.

Your other option is to setup a community MESH network, using several specialized AP/Backhaul radios to generate a local community network which covers the area. You will need several locations to put these units (also outdoors) and the software to control them.
