    Premature Release +UPDATE, June 18, 2013
    NoNonsense (Miami) –

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
Although I firmly believe that there is no better recommendation than Amazon reviews consensus, I decided to ignore it this time and buy this product. I did it because I have had many great Seagate products and because with new technologies the problem may be on the customer’s lack of basic expertise or patience.

Well, my apologizes to those who tried to prevent my purchase with their good advice. You were right.

The good about the product is that it does deliver solid streams of video or audio content wirelessly to multiple devices. However, it takes forever to write or upload your stuff into Seagate Central. It’s incredibly slow to receive your input. AND, even worse, it’s unreliable. Not usually, but every now and then, it does a “disappearing act” from your list of drives. Which is incredibly scary…

For all the good it does, I, and obviously many others, don’t have any use for a device that is slow AND unreliable. I hope Seagate keeps working on the concept. I would concentrate on expanding the storage capacity of Seagate Wireless Plus 1 TB Mobile Device Storage with Built-In Wi-Fi Streaming as a perfect solution. Until then, I would advise people to wait..

UPDATE: I’m very disappointed that Amazon has decided, for months now, to cook the ratings of this bad product by using VINE reviewers. Vine is a respectable program when used to produce reviews for new products that need people to give them a try. That is not how VINE has been used here. This “expensive” product has been given for free to people that are more likely to consequently give it a high grade. This was done to balance the bad grades of real customers who bought the product with their own money and want to warn others not to waste their time and money. Amazon is usually amazing, not this time, not at all.

    Dear NoNonsense,

We wanted to apologize for the problems experienced with your Seagate Central Shared Storage Network drive.

You will experience slower performance if you are transferring files to the device over a wireless connection. Please try transferring files to the drive from a computer that is wired to your network as this should result in better performance.

It may also help to update the firmware on this drive to the latest available. To check for the latest firmware update, try the following link listed below:

If the suggestions above do not help, we would like to talk with you, by phone preferably, to determine the root cause and available resolution to the problem. We have created a case based on your Amazon name that shows your review and our response. If from the US or Canada our contact number for technical support is 800-732-4283.

    Best Regards,
    Seagate Support

Awesome for the price, April 27, 2013
    Eric W

I’m a serious enthusiast and Unix/Linux systems guy. However, I also understand the need for easy, out of the box solutions.

This device? It rocks for me and for my proverbial mother. Actually, my mother doesn’t yet own one, but she should! It is easy to use and configure, although the manual is quite lacking. You’ll want to use a wired connection if you want performance, but enthusiasts might still find the performance lacking compared to a PC or high-end NAS solution. However, for the price, this thing delivers for novices and entusiasts alike.

    Blow-by-blow review below:

Before I get to all the great things about it, lets set expectations:
    * This device is priced only a few dollars more than a bare drive.
    * Performance is about 22 MB/s (160mbps) for Windows and Apple file sharing.
This is faster than your WiFi, however. Use a wired connection.
    * Performance jumps to 45 MB/s for insecure FTP!
    * Included instructions are lacking. The device is EASY to setup, but you need to find the instructions online.

    The good things (non-technical goodness):
    * Easy to setup (although the manual is lacking)
    * Easy to use.
    * DLNA, iTunes server, etc… all disabled by default, and easy enough to enable if you want them.
    * Facebook media backup feature
    * Print-server included (although not advertised!)

    So the great, geeky things?
    * Based on Seagate’s more expensive BlackArmour NAS product.
    * Runs Linux with SSH enabled by default
    * Uses LVM storage by default (snapshots!!!)
    * Ethernet supports jumbo frames (ssh then ‘ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000’)
    * The Linux OS includes a bunch of things in the kernel that might be useful:
    – EXT4 (also ext2, ext3)
    – XFS
    – FUSE (NTFS driver included)
    – WebDAV mount utilities
    – Potential iSCSI support (supported in kernel – utilities missing)
    – Potential NFS support – utilities missing, some scripts remain. Could be made to work.
    * Two core CPU – although only one is enabled in software.

The board that drives this thing is a Cavium Networks CNS3420, an ARMv11 platform
    (see […])

    Bad things?
    – The second CPU core is disabled! (but might be made to work)
    – iSCSI and NFS won’t work out of the box (but might be made to work)
    – Jumbo frames don’t seem to improve performance much (but some tweaking might help…)
    – Enabling SSL for FTP drops the speed to 1.5MB/s.

Great for local access, but don’t bother for remote access, July 27, 2013
Ed (San Francisco Bay Area) –
    (TOP 100 REVIEWER)

This review is from: Seagate Central 2TB Personal Cloud Storage NAS STCG2000100 (Personal Computers)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)
The Seagate Central storage drive is network drive, capable of serving up media to DLNA devices like TVs, smartphones, and tablets. It can also run as an iTunes server and functions as a backup device for Mac and Windows computers. There are other devices like the Seagate Central, but the Central is meant to be used in your home, hard-wired to a router using an Ethernet connection.

    – Easy to set up and use
    – Streaming media works well on many devices
    – Can add more storage via USB port
    – Good value

    – Remote access is unusable

Setup of the Seagate Central is quick and easy. The web interface is laid out nicely with five tabs: Home, Users, Social, Services, and Settings. Under services, you can enable or disable Seagate Remote Access, Seagate Media, DLNA, and iTunes. The 2 TB version of the Seagate Central has 1.71 TB of usable space, once you delete the demo files that come on the drive.

Throughput was reasonably fast at 40 MB/s over the Ethernet connection. It’s slower than most dedicated NAS devices, but the Seagate Central is smaller and cheaper. I was able to copy a 4.79 GB folder of video files from my hard drive to the Seagate Central in 2 min 1 sec.

Remote access via a web browser and the Seagate media apps was painfully slow and practically unusable. Even with an upload speed of 6 Mbps in my home, remote access to the Seagate Central was poor. I wasn’t surprised, since most homes don’t have fast upload connections to the Internet.

Mac OS X users can perform Time Machine backups to the Seagate Central. Windows users need to download the Seagate Dashboard software from Seagate, which works like Time Machine. Those of you who have Seagate external hard drives may already be familiar with how Seagate dashboard works.

There’s also an entire tab dedicated to archiving your Facebook data, which I suppose appeals to some people, but I had no interest in this particular feature.

The Seagate Central has a single USB port which can be used to expand storage by connecting a USB flash drive or an external hard drive.

The Seagate Central is a solid media storage drive that can stream videos, music, and photos in your home. If you have a TV, smartphone, or tablet that supports DLNA and or iTunes, the Central streams very well to those devices. However, accessing those same media files remotely is an exercise in patience not worth doing. If you think of the Seagate Central as an easy-to-use and inexpensive network media storage/backup drive, I think you’ll be happy with it.

  6. CloudFTP. Wirelessly share ANY USB storage with iPad, iPhone

  7. http://www.pcmag.com/reviews/nas

    they are pretty expensive though.

If you are into such things, you can also build one yourself

  8. Most of the external hard drives can be connected to a wifi router.
Some come with the ethernet connector that plugs into one of the four LAN router ports.
The ones that have USB cables need to be plugged into a router that has a USB port. Not all routers have that.
    Hope that helps.
