Question by fiestacarsrule: wireless network questions?
Ok here’s the situation. There are multiple wireless access points outside my building but I do not get a signal inside the building. What I want to do is get some kind of antenna or signal booster that I can plug a cat-5e cable into and to my wireless router inside so I can get the network inside the building. First, is it possible? Second, what do I need (as in what kind of antenna/booster/adapter etc…) The more specific the better!! Thanks!

Answer by Matt R
Well, I used a LINKSYS access point with a Signal Booster but in my scenario the CAT-5e cable will not run to the OUTSIDE. Instead, the signal booster cable will be run outside, and the CAT5e will go to the access point in the room from the router or modem.

So you have your modem inside, connected by cat5e to your wireless router which must be near the OUTSIDE wall. Then connect the antennae to the router, drill a small hole or crack a window open a smidge and place the antennae outside.

Keep in mind, I now have a D-Link wifi router and it does not have the port to plug this antennae into. I have had success with this only with a Linksys. It’s like a small screw-in plug similar to that of a Coax cable and connecter, just smaller.

What customers say about Super Power Supply® High Gain Long Range Yagi Antenna 18dBi 2.4 GHz WiFi Antenna Booster Directional RP-TNC For Wireless LAN, Public Hotspot, Video Systems 18db 18dbi 16dbi?

  1. You can get a high gain antenna with a long lead for your wireless router. You disconnect the existing antenna and connect the new antenna lead. You can’t use cat-5 for an antenna lead.

Look on the D-Link web site, they have several antennas.

    Bill

  2. Not sure this is possible, but I know that you can get larger and more powerful antennas for your outside access points probably.

And inside the building, you should try using a Wireless G Network booster or two, it will take in the small signal and boost it a whole lot so that you may get better reception inside.

Linksys sells most of these things. They also have a livesupport team that you can contact if you have questions.

  3. sounds like you need a wireless card with a long wire that you can hang out the window.

as for a wireless signal repeater, i dont think they make them.

  4. So you want to steal a wireless signal, and run it to your wired router? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA.

    Unpossible.
