After my positive experience with Thecus’ N5200Pro NAS, I was positively disposed to consider another Thecus Product. The N5200 is still competitive with small business/home NAS in terms of speed, but its inability to recognize greater than 2TB hard drives limits its continued expandibility.

No such problem with the N5550. Installation of 3TB drives and set up for RAID 5 was a breeze, made even easier by the considerable inprovement in user interface software since the introduction of the N5200Pro some years ago. Great user features such as USB 3.0 connectivity, apps for smartphones, port aggregation for the two Gigabit ethernet ports, etc etc.

Very pleased with my purchase so far.

Product documentation could be more concise – much lost in translation to english it seems. This product is only stable when recommended configuration is followed. Error reporting is a bit lacking on this system as well. Otherwise a decent product for the money.

Update. Problems reappeared with this unit and it seems there is a defective DOM chip inside. Technical Support has not been very responsive since I have asked for a replacement or refund. We will see if they stand by this product or the customer and I will update more then.

This is my first Thecus storage device, I can’t stress enough how simple and quick it is to set up. I’ve been hearing both positive and negatives about the brand but from my experience, it works spot on.

What really helped me learn about the product is the Thecus website. I found some useful articles but the how-to videos really explained the capabilities of the 5 bay NAS.

Currently using my Thecus N5550 with three 1TB WD Red HDD which pair up smoothly. I like how the noise is limited when I use them together. For users who seek pure storage capacity and performance, the Thecus N5550 is the unit that will will fulfill needs.
