Question by Ms Penny Lane is In My Tree: I’m trying to extend my internet up to 500 ft, what do I need?
I’m looking at two items:
http://www.amazon.com/Hawking-Directional-Antenna-outdoor-HAO14SDP/dp/B000B59J8I/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
http://www.amazon.com/Hawking-Hi-Gain-Outdoor-Wireless-300N-Repeater/dp/B003O7MY1E/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_4

Do I need two antennas, one antenna, or should I pair a repeater and antenna? I’m not very techy, so any advice would be helpful. Also, I need the signal to reach into a building outside of the home that is probably about 300 feet away. What do I need and what would be the best cost effective way to achieve this? Thank you.

A repeater is the way to go. Or fiber

was not able to receive stations 50 miles away that I needed. rotator was difficult to use with no indicator of present setting. might be usable with camper or boat but not house.

  2. You really need expert advice and probably a site survey. I would be very hesitant to recommend either of the things you are looking at without more information. In the most typical case a wired link would be my preferred option but how you would arrange that also really needs a site survey to determine – if you have a convenient source of power in the middle of the run twisted pair ethernet would be the best way to go. If not then you would probably be looking at a fiber optic link. Wireless would be lower down on my list of options to consider, and I certainly would not be considering the sort of commodity wifi equipment you are looking at here.

  3. Just a thought. You could try running a splitter off your modem. One modem with two routers basically. Then run a lan cable from the modem out to the building. Then hook up a wireless router in the building.

Run the lan underground in some PVC piping. So 300 feet of PVC. Two routers. A splitter coming off the back of the modems lan cable. Not the ISP coax cable but the lan cable.

You can get 300 feet of PVC at Home depot (1/2″) for about 40 or 50 bucks. A wireless router would run you 25-40 bucks. All this can be got on Ebay for half the price probably.

The reason I suggest this route is because it cuts down on access. You don’t want to be blasting your internet all over the neighborhood. People can still snip you internet activity even if its secure with WEP or WPA.

But either of those items you mentioned before would work. Just call them and ask what you need and how it works.

  4. If you cannot run fiber or ethernet using a PoE powered switch to extend the ~300ft limit of cat5 i would recommend ubiquiti devices; particularly the nanostation M5. With two of those, you configure the wireless link on the devices and they will bridge your networks. In essence, you configure both radios in WDS mode (one ap and one station) and plug cat5 into each and it is as if you had one long cat5 run between the two points.
