Question by Jade Harley: Can I set up my wireless printer without using a USB cable?
I Just got an Epson BX625FWD wireless printer scanner fax. Trying to install it on windows 7×64 laptop.

I downloaded the latest drivers from the Epson website but the on screen instructions are telling me to connect the printer to my computer using the supplied USB cable and the printer didn’t come with one. Why on earth does a wireless printer need to be connected by a usb cable.

I really need to use this printer now so if anyone has any ideas how to get round this I would be very grateful.

What customers say about Wireless Printing is Easy?

  1. Most of wireless printers will have an active wireless point like setup, which means if you search for networks using your laptop or pc (same way you connect to a new wireless network) you may find a wireless network with the epson name.. try to connect to this and browse to any website it should automatically take you to the setup page of the printer..

After you are done configuring it, disconnect from the wireless point and connect to your wireless network again.

If this didn’t work, try to connect the printer using a network cable to your router (if possible) and then navigate through the options on the screen (the printer screen) to see if you could set up the printer to connect to your wireless access point.

  2. Hi Jade,

Take no notice of the so called IT Expert, that wont work.

The printer setup is asking for a USB cable because the printer isn’t yet connected to your router and so it wants to send the SSID (which is just your network name) and password to the printer through the USB cable.

Good news is that you don’t have to use the cable, you can easily do the initial setup and connect your printer to the router using the printer keypad as follows:

    1. Enter the settings menu, to do this there will either be a spanner button somewhere on the printer keypad or the settings option will be listed on the menu.
    2. Choose Network Settings
    3. Choose Wireless LAN Setup
    4. From the list you should be able to see the SSID for your network if so choose it. If your router is set to not broadcast the SSID it won’t show in the list, in this case select “other network” from the list and enter the SSID manually then press the OK button to confirm.
    5. Enter the password for your network and press the ok button to confirm.
    6. Now back to your computer screen and this time choose additional computer from the options instead of first or initial setup.
    7. Follow the instructions and the printer and scanner will now install without the need of a USB cable.

Additionally I believe the BX625FWD has got wireless Fax capability so you can send faxes directly from a word processor or spreadsheet program such as Word or Excel without having to print it out and scan it in.

To get this working in win 7

    1. Download the Epson Fax utility for your printer and launch it.
    2. From the dialog box choose BX625FWD Series Fax.
    3. The Fax software will install
    4. Follow any instructions to finish installing fax Software
    5. Your done and you can send wireless faxes

    To do so
Open or create a new document , for instance in word
    Select print
In the printer name box click the down arrow and select the Epson BX625FWD series Fax
    Click print
You will now be asked to enter the fax number and given options to add it to your fax phone book you can also choose different cover pages to be sent with the fax or you can just send it as it is.
Click send and the word document will be sent wirelessly to the printer which will then send it as a fax to the number you entered.

    Handy if you use faxes

  3. My epson artisan required that it be connected either with the USB cable or with the internet cable to the router. After the printer is detected and installed, you can then configure it for wireless and remove the cable.
